Safety Tips - Slips, Trips & Falls

Slip, trip and falls are your Housing Authority’s Number One Loss Cause year after year after year from a liability standpoint. Let’s be proactive rather than reactive because this type of claim can and should be prevented. Try these SAFETY TIPS at your properties. They really work:

  • Inspect – Inspect – Inspect your properties. You must be aware of the conditions of your property as they change daily. You must check your common areas such as your sidewalks, parking lots, stairways and playgrounds.
  • In the winter remove ice build up immediately. Use sand if necessary.
  • Note all problems and hazards and create a work order ASAP for repairs by your maintenance staff.
  • Highlight (with paint) your curbs, steps and any areas where the general public needs to be aware of the loss potential these areas present. Be sure that the paint doesn’t decrease traction.
  • Enclose work areas with cones, brightly colored tape or temporary fencing.
  • If work areas and/or jobs are long term, check these areas frequently to ensure that children playing in the area have not removed barriers or flagging.
  • Don’t forget housekeeping. In the office, shop and storage buildings keep cords, tools and other tripping hazards off the floor.
